On October 13th, 2012, the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum held its first awards ceremony as part of the annual Explore Philly’s Buried Past event that the PAF co-sponsors with Independence National Historical Park as part of Pennsylvania Archaeology Month (October). The following text (read by PAF President Douglas Mooney) introduces and explains the establishment of these awards:

PAF is now closing in on its second decade, and, with the passage of time, it has become possible to identify and point to important developments that have shaped both Philadelphia archaeology and our organization. We rightfully begin to recognize the accomplishments of PAF members as well as the activities of individuals outside our group who share many of our goals and aspirations, and who have stewarded the archaeological resources of the area or otherwise furthered the research, preservation, and interpretation of Philadelphia’s archaeological record.

Toward this end, in this, PAF’s 15th year of existence, we have established two awards that will be presented now and in our future that recognize individuals and groups whose activities form part of the legacy of our organization and Philadelphia’s archaeological history.

The PAF Douglas Heller Award
Established in 2012, this award recognizes unusual actions or activities of individuals and or organizations that have furthered the cause of, and support for, archaeology in the city of Philadelphia and or its hinterlands. This award was created in honor of Douglas Heller (1955-2012), a member of PAF, who also championed the archaeology of the President’s House site at his website USHistory.org, and who developed, and also served as webmaster for (2007-2012), the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum webpages at www.phillyarchaeology.org. Membership in the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum is NOT a requirement for nominee consideration. This award is not bestowed annually.
